Where did its English name come from?

The British explorer and missionary Dr David Livingstone was the first European to see the waterfall and gave the falls the English name. He named it after Queen Victoria of The United Kingdom. Although the local name for Victoria Falls is “Mosi-oa-Tunya,” meaning “The Smoke that Thunders,” reflecting the awe-inspiring sight and sound of the cascading water.

500 million litres of water cascade the falls every minute.
